What it is

An ultra plogging relay along Sydney's coastline to protect the places we play

Sauna to Sauna is a community relay along Sydney's coastline on Saturday 14 November, during the 48 Hour Mission. We're going from The Sauna Project's sauna at Palm Beach to its sauna at Vaucluse, 85 km, and we want your club to take a leg.

Run clubs each take a section, pass the baton on to the next club, and pick up rubbish as they go.

It's in partnership with The Sauna Project Sydney and powered by Swedish EV brand Polestar, our Official EV Partner for the 48 Hour Mission.

84.5 km
of coastline, Palm Beach to Vaucluse
1,584 m
of climbing along the way
5 legs
of 10 to 21 km, each ending with a clean-up

Why we're doing it

Leave the trails cleaner than we found them

Four smiling plog crew members holding up their bags of collected rubbish.

The 48 Hour Mission has always been about clubs doing what they love and making it count for the planet. The coastal paths are where so many of us train, race and catch up every week, and they cop a lot of litter. So every leg picks up rubbish as it goes, and we count the lot at the finish.

It's also a chance for run clubs from Palmy to the Eastern Suburbs to meet and cheer each other on. Because protecting the places we play starts with the places we run every week.

Our partners

What do Saunas, Plogging, Polestar and Cinnamon Buns have in common?

Sauna, plogging, Fika and Polestar all come from Sweden, so this one has a Swedish flavour from start to finish.

The Sauna Project Sydney

The Sauna Project Sydney's saunas bookend the relay: a sunrise send-off at Palm Beach and a well-earned finish at Vaucluse. A crew from The Sauna Project runs Leg 1, and every team that takes part gets a free sauna session with them.

How it works

It's a club relay.

Each club takes a leg of 10 to 21 km, picks up rubbish along the way, followed by a beach clean, then hands the baton to the next club.

groups

A leg for every club

We split the route into legs and give each run club its own section. You run your leg, then hand the baton to the next club.

Run clubs, any pace

Run clubs take the coastal paths, one leg at a time. Every pace is welcome. It's a relay, not a race.

recycling

Plog as you go, then clean up

Every runner gets a plogging bag to fill along their leg. At the end of each leg, the team does a 20-minute beach clean at the handover spot. The support van collects it all, and we add it up at the finish.

flag

Going the whole way?

If you or someone in your club wants to do the full distance, register your interest. We'd love to follow your day.

Times are a guide, based on about 6 min/km, with 10 minutes at each changeover and 30 minutes at the aid stop. They'll shift a little on the day, so we'll confirm your club's handover time once legs are locked in. Aim to arrive at your changeover 15 minutes early. Full route: Sauna to Sauna on Strava.

Plogging and beach cleans

Pass the baton, pick up the rubbish.

Every leg plogs the whole way, then finishes with a clean-up at the handover spot. We count the lot at the finish.

FAQs

Good questions

Does our club need to be signed up to the 48 Hour Mission?

Yes. It's free to enter, and your relay kms count towards your club's Mission total.

How long is each leg?

Between 10 km and 21 km. Long legs can be split between two groups from the same club, so nobody has to do more than they want.

Can we do more than one leg?

Absolutely. Let us know and we'll fit you in.

What if we can't make the whole morning?

You only need to be there for your leg and the handover.

What do we do with the rubbish?

Fill your plogging bag as you go, then do a 20-minute beach clean when you finish your leg. Unload it all into the back of the van, which takes it from there, and it's all counted at the finish.

Do we need to be fast?

Not at all. It's a relay, not a race. Go at whatever pace suits your crew.

Can individuals join, or is it clubs only?

It's built around clubs, but anyone keen to do the full distance can register their interest.

How to get in
