Drives systems change

Moving your super changes what your slice of the pool backs, and adds to the signal that members want their money in a climate-ready future.

13: Climate action

What

  • Start with the research pledge if you haven’t already.
  • Look under the label of a few sustainable options, and compare fees, performance and insurance too.
  • If it’s right for your circumstances, move your super and let your employer know.
  • Snap a screenshot of your switch confirmation to log this pledge. Keep your balance and member number out of it.

Why

Switching your super won’t fix climate change on its own, and nobody’s asking it to. Super is a collective system, when you join a fund, your money is invested alongside everyone else’s, and the choices made across the whole system add up to something way bigger than any one person.

So it’s worth knowing what you’re joining. A sustainable fund looks at the environmental, social and economic conditions that can affect long-term returns, and acts on them. It does that by screening, investing in climate solutions, engaging with companies, voting and advocating for change. Every fund’s mix is different, which is why looking under the label matters. And it should always sit alongside your best financial interests, not instead of them.

It’s still a real decision, so take your time. Fees, performance and insurance all matter. The right fund is the one that fits your life as well as your values. Once you’ve decided, for a lot of people it’s a bit of admin, and then your money keeps working in the background through every long run and every rest day. More power in moving together.

Because protecting the places we play is a long game, and so is super. 💙

This is general information, not financial advice. Consider your own circumstances and the fund’s product disclosure statement (PDS) and target market determination (TMD) before deciding, and consider chatting to a licensed financial adviser.

How

  • Look under the label: “Sustainable” means different things at different funds. Check which tools a fund uses (screens, climate solutions, engagement, voting, advocacy).
  • Look for real evidence, like a published screening list, examples of companies they’ve engaged with, and how they’ve voted. Check whether the approach covers the whole fund or just one option.
  • Check for certification: Responsible Returns lists products certified against the Australian and New Zealand Responsible Investment Standard, so it’s a handy way to see that a fund’s claims stack up.
  • Compare apples with apples: Moneysmart suggests comparing the same type of option across funds, such as balanced against balanced, over the same timeframe.
  • Check your insurance: Lots of us have life or income protection insurance through super. Know what you’d keep or lose before you move.
  • Get a second opinion: A licensed financial adviser can help you weigh it up.
  • Make the move: Join your new fund, roll your super over through the fund or myGov, then give your employer the new details.
  • Already there? High five. Make the research pledge instead to check your option still fits, and tell your crew how you made the switch.
