12: Responsible consumption and production · 13: Climate action

What

  • Take a reusable bottle with you every day: work, uni, errands, travel
  • Refill from taps and fountains instead of buying bottled water
  • Keep your bottle clean so you actually want to use it
  • Snap a photo of your bottle out and about to log this pledge

Why

Tap water is right there, yet we still buy it in plastic. More than 370 million single-use plastic water bottles end up in Australian landfill every year, according to SA Water. And plastic bottles can take 400 to 1,000 years to break down.

Recycling doesn’t catch the problem either. Only around 20% of plastic packaging in Australia was recycled in 2023–24.

Carrying a bottle takes about two seconds of thinking. Once it lives in your bag, you stop noticing you’re doing it, and so does your wallet.

Because protecting the places we play starts with what we grab on the way out the door. 💙

How

  • Make it part of the routine: Keep your bottle by the door or in your everyday bag, so it goes out with your keys and phone.
  • Find a refill: Sydney Water has a refill station finder, and SA Water’s free BYOB app maps nearly 1,000 drinking fountains across SA. Check your council or water provider’s website for one near you.
  • Just ask: Don’t be shy about asking a café or restaurant to top you up with tap water.
  • Keep it fresh: Wash it in warm soapy water and let it dry with the lid off. A bottle brush gets into the corners.
  • Flying somewhere? Take it through security empty and fill it up on the other side.
  • Use what you’ve got: Most of us have a cupboard full of bottles already. Pick the one that fits your bag before buying another.
  • Rope in your workplace: Ask whether bottled water can be swapped for jugs and glasses at meetings, or if there’s room for a refill station.
