Drives systems change

Events are where people pick up skills, find their crew and get the confidence to do more. Host one and you bring others along with you.

What

  • Go to, volunteer at or organise one climate or nature event each month
  • Think workshops, talks, community meetings, letter-writing sessions, tree plantings or clean ups
  • Bring a mate, or your whole club
  • Snap a photo at the event to log this pledge. Check everyone in it is happy to be shared.

Why

Big change happens when people come together. Events help us learn, meet people who care about the same things and find the nerve to do more.

And Australians already show up. More than 5 million of us volunteered through an organisation in 2025. National Tree Day alone has had around 5 million volunteers plant about 28 million trees since 1996.

The biggest ripple comes from bringing others along, like a club lead introducing something to members, or five mates writing to their MPs together. Showing up is where it starts. Organising one takes it further.

Because protecting the places we play is a team sport. 💙

How

  • See what’s on: Your council’s events page is a good first stop. City of Sydney’s What’s On, for example, has a “Talks, courses & workshops” category. Ask your local council about Bushcare or Landcare groups too.
  • Get your hands dirty: National Tree Day’s find-a-site tool lists community plantings each July, and Clean Up Australia lets you search for clean ups by postcode.
  • Write together: Climate Writers runs monthly letter-writing sessions in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Easy first event if you’re new to this.
  • Host your own: Start small. A letter-writing session after the Saturday club run, a skills swap or a film night all count. Pick a time when people are already together.
  • Check with council first: Rules vary a lot. North Sydney only needs a park booking for 60 or more people, while Greater Dandenong asks for an event permit over 200 people or if there’s music or food stalls. Councils often want $20 million public liability cover for bigger events.
  • Sort the insurance: Public liability covers the public, but usually not volunteers who get hurt. That needs personal accident cover. Ask your club committee what the club’s policy covers off the field.
  • Plan for safety: Check the forecast, have a wet weather plan, bring a first aid kit and make sure everyone knows who to call if something goes wrong.
  • Already a regular? Bring a newbie next time, or offer the organisers a hand with setting up.
