Cars and other light vehicles make up the biggest share of Australia’s transport emissions. Every trip you don’t drive has little or no tailpipe at all.

What

  • Walk, run, ride or catch public transport to work or study
  • Too far for one mode? Ride to the station and train the rest
  • Have to drive? Carpool, or skip the trip and work from home
  • Snap a photo of your commute, or a screenshot of your Strava activity, to log this pledge. Set a privacy zone so your home address isn’t on show

Why

Transport makes up around 22% of Australia’s carbon dioxide emissions, and light vehicles like cars, utes and vans were about 60% of transport emissions in 2022. The average vehicle on Aussie roads emits about 191 g of CO2 for every kilometre driven, and the average commute is about 16 km each way.

Walking, running and riding come in at zero tailpipe emissions. Trains and buses spread their emissions across a lot of passengers.

There’s something in it for you too. A run or ride commute is training you don’t have to find extra time for, and it beats sitting in traffic.

Because protecting the places we play starts with how we get to work on a Tuesday morning. 💙

How

  • Start with one day: Pick your easiest day of the week and build from there.
  • Plan the run commute: Pack clothes the night before, or drop a week’s worth at work on Monday. A towel and deodorant in your drawer go a long way.
  • Scope out work first: Check for bike parking and a shower before day one, so there are no surprises.
  • Go multi-mode: Run or ride to the station and train the rest. Check your local network’s rules on bikes on trains before you go.
  • Tag it on Strava: Mark your run or ride as a Commute and watch the kays add up over the month.
  • Share the ride: If driving’s the only option, see who else is heading the same way.
  • Already a car-free commuter? Legend. Bring a workmate along, or get a club commute crew going.
